CRNAs Performing Transesophageal Echocardiogram
AZANA Position Statement:
"Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesiologists (CRNAs), with the necessary training and education are proficient in safely performing and manipulating a Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) probe throughout the intraoperative phase. This enables CRNA's to evaluate the patient's status, manage and treat hemodynamic conditions, and provide procedural support to the qualified proceduralist, in accordance with A.R.S. 32-1634.04 sections 2,4, and 5."
Statement of Scope from AZBON:
It is within the scope of practice of a Certified Register Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) to intubate and manipulate a Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) probe during the perioperative period to evaluate and monitor the hemodynamic status of the patient and to provide procedural assistance to the qualified physician surgeon in accordance with A.R.S. 32-1634.B.04 2, 4, 5, and 7.
General Requirements:
A CRNA must be certified by the Arizona State Board of Nursing and meet the educational requirements of R4-19-405, completion of a nationally accredited program in the science of anesthesia and receive specific dedactic training as part of their accredited program or from a post-education CME course.
