Before your elective procedure you should not have anything to eat or drink for 8 hours. This time is shortened for smaller children. Having food or liquid in your stomach can increase the risk of complications during anesthesia. Some medications are excluded in this recommendation, including some for high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, and some pain medicines. These should be taken with only a small sip of water. Never take medicine for diabetes the morning before surgery.
There are a few things that your anesthesia provider must know about you that can help him/her plan the best anesthetic for you. You should inform your provider of ANY prior surgeries, problems with prior anesthetics, and if you have any of the following conditions:
|
Any heart conditions such as: -High blood pressure -Previous heart attacks -Heart murmurs -Recent or current chest pain (angina) -Prior heart surgeries -Pacermaker / defibrillator -Shortness of breath -Easily fatigued
